Bathroom Remodel Do’s and Don’ts

# Supervise while tiles are installed. You must check with a ruler that the tiles are perfectly level (don’t be embarrassed!), otherwise the room will look terrible, even if you bought high-end tiles.

# Don't make the shower too small (smaller than 80/80 cm). It may sound surprising, but sometimes a bathtub takes up less space than a shower and you should consider this option if the room is small (a bathtub is lower, and also narrower).

# Plan an electrical outlet behind the mirror for a dehumidifier and/or mirror lighting.

# Don't use bathroom exhaust fans. They simply won't do the job. It is better to install a blower.

# Use the space above the flush tank for a narrow storage cabinet or shelves (for shampoo bottles, toilet paper, cleaning products, etc.)

# Don't use 4-port shower valves. Their knobs tend to break easily. It is better to install two 3-way valves.

# If the bathroom has mold issues, lower the ceiling and insulate the outer wall with mineral wool and plaster.

# Don’t choose round aluminum tile strips. They’re ugly.

# Remove window casings and re-install them after tiling, to achieve a perfect finish.

# And most importantly – ask the contractor to perform a flood test to make sure the room is completely sealed. Dampness is a terrible disease and the only effective way to deal with it would be to destroy the room and start over.
